Perth, Western Australia, March 12, 2019: Australia’s largest Catholic church has officially opened its doors to the public and its first congregation of the faith is expected to arrive in Perth next month.
The first Mass will take place on Monday, March 14 at St James Cathedral in Perth’s west, and the first 500 worshippers will be welcomed to St James.
It’s not the first time a new church has opened in Perth, which has seen its Catholic population increase in recent years.
More than 80 new churches opened last year in Perth and the rest of the state, including in Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney.
Pope Francis is the first Pope to arrive on Australian soil since his predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, in 2015.
He was welcomed by Bishop Richard Williams at the start of his trip to Australia.
“I am very happy to welcome the Pope,” Bishop Williams said.
Archbishop Peter Saunders, the archbishop of Melbourne, said Pope Francis was “a good man who is in a good place”.
“The Pope is in an extremely challenging situation with the persecution of people who are persecuted for their faith,” Bishop Saunders said.
The church will also welcome its first non-Catholics, the Bishop of New South Wales, who is the president of the Anglican Communion. “
[He] has expressed his deep faith in the power of prayer and the need for people to pray for a more peaceful world.”
The church will also welcome its first non-Catholics, the Bishop of New South Wales, who is the president of the Anglican Communion.
Bishop Saunders said the new building was not built to accommodate people of other religions.
We are building a new Church to serve a new generation of Australians, he said.
The new building will house the Catholic Bishops office, a ministry that promotes Catholic values.
In addition to the Bishops, the church will host a ministry dedicated to the study of the history of the church and the teachings of Pope Francis.
And it will have a parish, the Cathedral of St Mary, which is the largest in the city and is being dedicated to St Francis.
It is the latest church building to be built in the state for the Catholic Church, which was established in 1892.
There are currently more than 800 churches in Western Australia and more than 40 million people follow the Church’s teachings.
