It’s no secret that the video game industry is growing at an alarming rate, but how quickly that growth can be matched by the video games themselves can be hard to determine.
That’s why it’s important to take a look at the current state of the video gaming industry and how it compares to the rest of the entertainment industry.
First up, a quick recap of how games are being made and sold today.
Games are sold on a daily basis across a variety of platforms, including mobile devices, consoles, PC’s and even smart phones.
In total, games account for $7.4 billion in annual revenue, according to IDC, with the vast majority of that coming from the PC, console and mobile platforms.
However, the number of titles on each of these platforms is still limited.
For instance, the PC version of Super Mario Maker alone currently has a total of around 1,000 titles, while mobile titles are only around a dozen.
So how much money does all of this money make for developers?
As you might expect, the answer is far less than the industry’s previous estimates put the total revenue at around $6 billion, and that number only includes digital sales, not physical sales.
The PC is also the biggest market for new games, with games selling at an average of more than 100,000 copies per day.
The next big market for games is smartphones, with Android users enjoying more than one billion downloads per month.
However, there are still fewer games available for smartphones than there are for PCs.
That means that the vast bulk of the revenue is coming from mobile, and mobile games tend to be more niche in nature than console games.
On the other hand, PC games are a big part of the business overall, accounting for roughly half of all video game revenue, while the console market is home to nearly half of that revenue.
So what makes a game successful?
For instance: How do you make a game more compelling than a console game, and more so than a smartphone game?
And, if there are no mobile games available, does that mean that you can’t make a mobile game as well?
